Hand Painted French Mats
The addition of French Matting to art is a intricate detailing of soft painted lines and watercolor panel washes to embellish and accentuate individual paper pieces of art. Other elements added to the design can be thin panels of gold leaf and hand made marbleized papers.
French mats date back to Giorgio Vasari (1511 – 1574). He hand painted niches and altars to surround his art pieces.
